"We inspect failed turf systems regularly. The turf fibers are almost always still usable. The problem is always underneath them."

Why We Explain the System

Most turf companies want you to pick a product. We want you to understand the installation.

Artificial turf fails for three reasons: insufficient base depth, poor compaction, and no drainage design. Every competitor in Los Angeles glosses over this because it slows down the sale. We explain it because customers who understand their installation make better decisions - and the systems we build don't come back as problems.

Common Questions

Before You Call

How long does artificial turf last in Los Angeles?

A properly installed system - compacted Class II base, appropriate fiber for the application, correct infill - typically lasts 15 to 20 years in the LA climate.

When systems fail early, it's almost always a base or drainage problem, not a fiber problem. Thin base, poor compaction, or no drainage design causes rippling, seam separation, and pooling within three to five years - regardless of what was spent on the turf itself.

What does artificial turf installation cost in Los Angeles?

Most residential projects in LA run $12 to $18 per square foot installed for a standard system. A 500 sq ft backyard typically falls between $7,000 and $10,000. Larger projects get better unit economics.

Pet turf systems with drainage layers and ZeoFill infill add $1.50 to $3.00 per square foot. The two biggest variables most homeowners don't expect: site access (hillside lots can add $1,500 to $3,500 in labor) and irrigation removal.

Why does artificial turf get hot in summer?

Dark synthetic fiber absorbs and retains solar radiation. On a 90-degree LA day, dark green turf in full afternoon sun routinely measures 140 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit at the surface. That's hot enough to burn dog paws and bare feet.

The most effective solutions are shade (50 to 80 degree reduction), evaporative infill like ZeoFill or HydroChill (30 to 50 degree reduction when hydrated), and lighter fiber color (15 to 25 degree reduction). We specify cooling infill as standard for any pet area or kids' play surface.

Is artificial turf safe for dogs?

Modern polyethylene turf systems with appropriate infill are non-toxic and safe for dogs. The variables that actually matter are drainage design and infill selection.

Pet areas require fully permeable backing (30+ inches per hour flow rate), a proper drainage slope, and antimicrobial infill like ZeoFill to prevent bacterial buildup and odor. Standard landscape turf installed without these upgrades develops odor problems within one to two LA summers. The turf isn't the problem - the specification is.

Does LA allow artificial turf? Are there restrictions?

Yes, artificial turf is permitted for residential use in Los Angeles. There is currently no ban in effect.

The LA City Council approved a motion in 2024 to study potential restrictions related to surface heat and PFAS content in older products. That is a study motion, not a restriction. Modern turf products from reputable manufacturers are PFAS-free.

LADWP offers rebates for removing turf and replacing it with drought-tolerant landscaping - not for installing synthetic turf. Standard residential turf replacement does not require a permit in the City of LA.

How do I know if my current turf needs repair or full replacement?

The decision comes down to base condition, fiber life remaining, and the nature of the failure.

Repair makes sense when the base is structurally sound, the problem is localized (one seam, one panel), and repair cost stays well below replacement cost. Replacement makes sense when the base has failed, multiple problems exist simultaneously, or the fiber is degraded across most of the field.

The most common mistake is repairing the visible symptom without addressing the underlying cause. A reseamed separation that re-opens in six months isn't a bad repair - it's a repair to the wrong problem. See our repair diagnostic guide for how we evaluate which situation you have.
